Default Spoke thread pitch

It seems that the thread pitch on my spokes is M4x0.80
Does that sound right?

At first I thought it was 32 threads per inch but the 10x32 tap and die was too big and the 8x32 was too small. I really don't think there is a 9x32 but there also doesn't seem to be a M4x0.80.
I have a set of spokes from an aluminum 17" rim that I want to use on a steel 17" rim but the spokes are a little too long.
I was hoping to just cut the threads in a little with a die but that isn't looking like a viable option.
