Default Big Sucker Questions

So I have the stainless steel Big Sucker and had a few questions.Arlen Ness says you don't have to oil the filter, just to clean it. But that's about all they say. I've just been cleaning it in gas, letting it dry, and putting it back on. A buddy says I'm crazy, and that I need to replace it with an oilable filter.

Question 1: Am I cleaning it the right way? If not, what is the right way?

Question 2: Is this a snake oil filter? Should I replace it with a traditional K&N style filter?

Just do what the manufacturer tells you to do and don't worry about what your know-it-all buddy has to say about it.
If it would make you feel any better, go ahead and replace it with a K&N element, then your know-it-all buddy will really think he really does know-it-all!

Your buddy is the one that is crazy. No filter on the planet lets more dirt through than a K&N. Hold one up to the light and look at it with a magnifying glass. You will find holes in it somewhere that are big enough to let dirt through. K&N says no big deal, the oil stops that dirt. Well. again, look deep into the pleats of a K&N with a magnifying glass and you will see there is no oil. They cannot get their own filters lubed properly so how are you expected too? Run the stainless steel filter you have. I would clean it with something like simple green instead of gas. But that's just me.

That's the thing. The manufacturer doesn't really say. I bought the bike used so I don't have the manual, and online searches just show me how many times they say you don't have to oil it.

Up until recently I was running a BS since 2008. They recommended to clean and reoil the filter that came with it. I did that with the K&N cleaning kit I bought.
Maybe they switched to another type of element since then.
