You have to check batteries under a load to get a clear picture of what is happening with your battery. If you hook your multimeter up to it and get a good reading then you try to start it and the voltage drops then your battery is not as strong as it initially seemed. Think about it in the sense that it takes very little juice to power the volt reading but a lot of juice to power a starter. I've had some batteries read 12.8v and drop to less than 2v when trying to start. Glad you found your problem though.

Make sure it is truly is your stator...usually the voltage regulator fails before the stator fails.
You can check the stator output for AC volts, and if it is producing the correct amount of AC volts, then it is fine and the regulator is suspect.
Your manual will tell you how to check the stator, and then the regulator. If it's the regulator, then that is a lot easier to fix. YD
