Default FLHTCU Backrest

I just bought a 1989 FLHTCU that has a driver's backrest (which I think is OEM). I was told that it is easily removable, but on first inspection, I don't see how it is done. I don't want to permanently remove it, so if it isn't something relatively simple, I'll probably opt to leave it alone. Anybody have any knowledge of this?

Welcome to HDF. Do you have a picture. Is there a chrome **** on the left side of the upright part of the backrest?

Welcome to HDF. Do you have a picture.
Here's the best pic I have at the moment:

The backrest does slideup and downthrough a slot in the seat. I fished around there to find a way to detach it, with no success. but then again I'm not really sure what I'm looking for

Easy to do, reach down in the slot the backrest fits into. you will feel the two round bars that go up into the seat. They are kind of like pinchers that have a fairly strong spring at the bottom. Squeeze the two round bars together and pull up. The bottom of the round bars has a point on the side and those points fit into holes on the bracket that mounts to the fender and the frame. The spring is pretty stout so be prepared. Once you get it out, it'll seem so easy, you'll wonder why you didn't automatically know how to get it ouot !

Good luck
