Your bike will have the standard plain-jane 103". The 103HO version was really just a marketing gimmick.
With all respect, the HO 103 was no gimick. Had both. The HO 103 had a small bump in compression and cams that were somewhere between a SE 254 and 255. They were both really good engines, but the HO in stage 1 form, with a good aftermarket stage 1 and a proper tune ran comparably well to my 2011 103 after installing a good aftermarket stage 2 with andrews 54h cams and really good tune.
I've ridden both numerous times. Like I said it was more of a marketing gimmick as the HO wasn't all that much of a HO engine. A little better, yes, but not by very much.

Interesting how opinions vary. I owned both, put a lot of miles on both in stock form and after some changes. The 2014 / HO was a stronger motor, especially after a simple stage 1 and a proper tune.
Thank you for the responses. I am thinking of doing a cam swap.
I had heard a bolt in cam with original heads wasn't worth it on the HO but makes a difference on the standard 103.
Any suggestions? My friend has a SE204 in his and really likes it. Not sure about its performance but it sure sounds good.
Since the cams were good to start, you're pretty much correct on the HO103... with good exhaust and tune. Had S&S power duals with mk 45s on my 14 king and a powervision with S&S tune that was later dialed in at Latus motors in Portland. Ended up at 92hp and 108tq. Some aftermarket cams would give slightly better hp numbers with about the same or a small bump in torque, so most (like me) didnt feel a need to spend money to change cams.
On my 2011 103 I installed andrews 54h cams along with fullsac xpipe, cometic .030 head gaskets... tuned with tts mastertune. It frkn ran great and with the mild ramp rates on the cam lobes, valve train noise was no different than stock. Dyno was just shy of 99hp with 106tq.
There are a lot of good offerings for cams for the 103 such as tts, woods, s&s, and andrews. I'd research all, consider your riding style and whether you prefer low rpm grunt or running up the rpm's a bit, and maybe call a few of our sponsors. If it were me, with your bike, I would opt for the andrews 57h.
Like MTB said, great choices in cams and options, just do your research and plan of attack!!!Pay once, cry once...Big fan of Andrews, proven and true....a TW37or 54, with mild head work, polish valves out to 80-82cc, will make that cams combo shine, plus you need a good dynoed....Good luck and have fun on your build.
