Hey guys I snapped my transmission shaft, wondering what I can do to fix this? Do I have to rip the gearbox out? Its a Ultima 6 speed kicker transmission. I have attached the photo. Is there anyway to remove the shaft and replace with a new one without opening the gearbox?
When you replace the shift Pawl, replace the spring as well.. I had an Ultima 6 speed as well and had a problem where the sharp edges of the pawl would wear into the spring and it would break and fall down into the great set.. not a good thing.. So I took a file and rounded the edges of the shift Pawl where the springs makes contract and replaced the spring..
Well Dan your right. My bike is a 88 Softail Custom. The shift shaft broke because of a improper clutch adjustment which had the clutch not fully pushing out so it was hard to shift through gears which lead to me stomping on it and it snapping. I am determined to fix this and have already ordered the part. My only concern is accessing and being able to pull the gear set out with the oil tank still on. Any thought on that? Or can the gear set be pulled from the side.
With a Softail, the horse shoe oil tank must come out to remove the shift drum cover as well as accessing the shift drum, forks etc. To remove the gear set to gain access to the shift Pawl. Sucks that the weakest part of the trans is all the way in..
To get at the oil tank, remove the extension on the front of the rear fender, it is held on my 4 bolts, this will give you access to the rear of the tank so that you can remove the plumbing. Don`t damage the nylon T back there, they are no longer available.
When you loosen the bolts on the clutch pressure plate, do it evenly, a little bit at a time, those standoffs break easily.
Genuine Harley Davidson service manual is a must have.
You have the primaries off, go ahead and pull the entire trans off. You can leave the oil tank and even the rear pipe on. You must loosen the oil tank up and take the clutch cable off too.

Why on earth would you consider doing it this way?
Pull the entire transmission in order to avoid pulling the oil tank?
Not what I would consider a shortcut...
