Seems there is some debate as to whether there were any Hds made in 1903.. Some say the first one from '03 was a bicycle with an engine strapped on, and the first actual bike made was in 1904.

Here's some info on HD, from the newsgroup rec.motorcycles.harley:

"Hd36knuckl" wrote:

The Harley-Davidson history has been often modified to fit Â*their needs of the
time. Like their claim of 88,000 WLA models produced during Â*W.W.II. That is a
fantasy for sure.
Author Herbert Wagner has spent years in the Library Of ConÂ*gress, Milwaukee
County Archives and even in the Harley-Davidson archives doiÂ*ng research to find
the true story. He has interviewed and has statements from tÂ*he children and
grandchildren of the Founding Fathers about the formation ofÂ* the MoCo. He has
found and gathered all the information by the Founding FatheÂ*rs and Board of
Directors in sworn testimony from a patent infringement triaÂ*l in the teens. He
has original 1905 and later sales brochures detailing the whÂ*en's and where's of
the MoCo. John Harley has "The Holy Grail" of Harley-DavidsoÂ*n. This is a single
sheet drawing of the bicycle engine drawn by his GrandfatherÂ* in 1901.
Now at last, Thanks to Mr. Wagner, the true story and its aÂ*ctual time frame is
here.
His book is titled "At The Creation". Buy a copy from AmazoÂ*n.com and you won't
put it down until you have finished it. All the myths are exÂ*ploded. All the
truth is found and documented. Facts are checked and cross cÂ*hecked. He even
names the first man to start lying about the Harley-DavidsonÂ* history in 1910
and why he left to MoCo in 1920.
Don't put much faith in "The Big Book Of Harley-Davidson. IÂ*t is full of myth's
and lies and plain old wives tales.

Later,
Chris
Who you callin' a CURMUDGEON!

Here's a website to go along with Chris' MOST EXCELLENT infoÂ*rmation.

Here's sumpin' from the book web site:

For the first time anywhere At the Creation exposes the false history upon which modern writers and experts have based their own renderings of Harley-Davidson's origin, including the faulty belief that 2003 is the 100th model year of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Wagner's hard-hitting account includes the stunning revelation that the machine widely celebrated today as a "1903" model almost certainly never existed outside the imagination of early advertising men, and that the first marketable Harley-Davidson was actually completed in 1904, with bikes for general sale first available in 1905! These amazing conclusions are backed up by early Motor Company documents and sworn testimony in a court of law!

Gotta love the internet, y'know?!!

I think he's saying that the three bikes supposedly made in 1903 is a fabrication...

Sounds like the book is the answer...

According to the research this guy did, there were no bikes assembled in 1903. The supposedly 1903 bikes in the museums are actually at least 1904 models, according to HD's own records. It's a fascinating book. I stupidly loaned mine out and it disappeared. Guess it's time to get another copy.

All y'all with 2004 bikes actually have the 100th anniversary models, and y'all with the badged 2003 bikes are riding fraudulent muttersickles. Shame on ya being suckered in by the Motor Company!

Yup, quite true. Another: "The bigger the boy; the bigger the toy."
