Default Two up or Duo

At the MRC I attended, the chief instructor said that the pillion seat on a Harley these days does not get much use. He told us that, in his experience, it is not long before your non-riding partner is pestering you to have her/his own scoot. Indeed in riding the biways around were I live, a summer mecca of sorts for bikers, I seem to see more duos than two ups. Have any of you found this to be true? If so, What is your story?

I think you'll find both running around pretty evenly. I know plenty of people who are content to ride two-up and then there are others, like my wife and I, who can't wait to go duo. She'll be getting my Sporty when I have the moolah to buy another bike. My wife likes to ride on the back but she really likes to have control of the bike herself. A guy I know said he bought his wife a bike and then sold it because he was so worried about her and was constantly looking out for her that he was always getting himself into trouble. Even when we get another bike we'll ride two-up every once in awhile.

My wife never was one to enjoy riding two up much. She learned to ride this past summer and it has been tremendous. We both truly enjoy loading up our gear and heading out. Most of the people we ride with ride their own bikes. I guess I believe that, in general, once a lady gets the thrill of riding her own bike, she's hooked.

Kelly says she wants to sit on the back, she enjoys it and has no interest in riding on her own. Never complains when I do stuff up front, never argues, nothing. We get where we're going and it's all good. She likes the full face helmet though, so it's hard to talk when riding...hoping when it gets a little warmer she'll change and like it without...we'll see...

Started out two-up. That was criteria when I was dating, if the chickie didnt like bikes or to ride, next. Most of the time this never was an issue. By the time you get Harley out of your mouth, they normally want to jump on, but finding a women that really enjoys to ride, and will ride long distance is not as easy to come by. Well, Ive enjoyed the experiences weve shared while putting down miles, but like this thread suggest, my little women starting taking an interest in having her own bike. I encourage it, cause to me, nothing is better than a chickie that rides. I bought her a 883 in Nov. and Im going to enroll her in a riding course in late March or April. She does pretty good all things considered. The biggest problem would be trusting the bike in a corner as so to lean it, rather than fight it. So to sum it up, yes, if your significant other enjoys riding on the bike, chances are in time, she'll want her own ride.

My wife was never interested in her own until we started being around several other women who ride. Depending on the day, and her mood, she wanted her own, then didn't want her own, then did. In January 1997 I just went and ordered her a 1997 Lowrider. Figured if she didn't like it we could always sell it.(Back then you cound sell one for more than you paid for it). Well, just before the bike arrived in March, she took the rider's course, started parking lot pratice, and has never looked back. She put 42,000 miles on that bike, and now has a 2001 Heritage Softtail.

About the only time she rides with me now is after we arrive a destination and go somewhere to eat or have a drink. Since she will not ride after having a drink, and since I don't drink, she will ride with me if she plans to indulge.

She is a super rider(better and safer than I am), she rides long distances in all kinds of weather and never complains, and is the best companion one could ask for on a road trip.

Regards,

Bill
