Please forgive my terminology, I am no mechanic. There are 3 cables going to the intake or throttle body, whichever it is, 2 go to the twist throttle and 1 goes under the seat to left side of the bike. I think that it is called an idle cable. Anyway, the 1 that goes under the seat broke and the idle got hung up at around 3000 rpm. The twist throttle works properly, but that idle cable was holding it open. If I pushed that cable back in the idle was normal. Twist the throttle and again that cable stayed out and idles high so I cut it. I ordered 1 but no telling how long it will take to get here. My question is, is it safe to ride the bike without that cable in operation? Borrowed from a thread about cruise control on an 04.
Also, I'm missing the number 14 bolt in the top but the breather cover helps hold it in place. I thought that missing that bolt was letting air in and causing the problem but it would idle fine with it loose once I pushed that cable back. Does anyone know the size of this bolt? Harley couldn't help me.

Reason: Add pic
Like I said, I'm no mechanic. So, with that 3rd cable cut and the breather off, the bike idles and revs and back to idle just fine. But with the breather on it idles high and will not come back down when riding. My initial thought, before finding that 3rd cable was that the idle cable or return cable was faulty because it looks like it broken where the 2 wires are attached to it at the neck of the frame in front of the tank.
I will try to get a pic of it when I get home. Just don't understand why the breather being on affects it, or if I'm still wrong about what the problem is.

If bolt 14 is missing, that could be your problem.
Does anyone know the size of this bolt and thread? HD dealership said to take it off and go to Fastenal or something. Its a pain without the correct tools to take out and get back in. You would think if there is a diagram telling the parts, there would be one with the size of bolts
