I'm not going to suggest anything someone shouldn't wear, but personally, I only wear wear chaps for protection from the cold and elements. Agree 100% full chaps or none at all.

Agree but why do they have to by 100%? Something you can slip on quicker would be great.
I have thought about kneck gators on my knees. Since I got lined knees, its not such an issue
It has to be damned cold on a long trip or pouring down rain for me to don the chaps. Neither would be solved by wearing half chaps IMO.
This partof country chaps are fairly regular, if you ride much. I have tried expensive merino wool long johns, but you need something to cut the wind.
I can the benefit of keeping my knees warm, that is the brunt of it. Like I said I have wondered about wrapping my knee in a neck gator or such. Even with chaps its a cold spot.
Beiong able to throw something on quick, has an advantage.
