Ran into similar issue when I removed several decals from snowmobile, PB Blaster worked way better than WD-40 or alcohol.

I used Goo Gone, and it worked quite well. I had to soak for 10 minutes then reapplied several times but eventually it removed the glue.

At work we used this https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b40070712/ to get off the sticky residue from automotive trim and such. It works good but is expensive.

Another Goo Gone gel fan here. WD40 is good, too, since you are just talking about shooting it on the chrome

Brake clean works well also, particularly on chrome or glass. Leaves very little residue so it's easily cleaned up after.
