Ok guys , your mechanical knowledge trumps my comprehension. My bike is a 2017 FATBOY with a stage one. Everything I had herd here was pos for a 2 upgrade until someone mentioned the harder cranking possibilities which is where we are now. I guess the bottom line is do I want to spend the money with the possibilities of having something go wrong.
2017 has Automatic compression release. Not an issue for you at all. So forget that so called issue.
Before picking a CAM do you home work. M8 is a single cam engine and it is a fact Exhaust that works well with the CAM choice provides best results in the end.
Long list of out stand cams for the M8.
A 2017 Fatboy is a TC engine, but you still need a free flowing air cleaner, exhaust, new lifters and will need a tuner after the work is completed. Lots of good cams for TC engines, you just need to select one that meets your riding style (ie low end torque.
If you are going to do the work yourself, I suggest calling FuelMoto, or at least look at their Dyno Charts of upgrades and tunes they have done in house. They have the experience, support and parts needed.
It means putting in a cam Harley should've done in the first place, and probably would have, except it wouldn't meet EPA emissions standards just like the tune it comes with stock is pretty much a no brainer.. Make no mistake, the EPA could care less what's best for you or the bike.
It's a night and day difference in performance.
Your reasoning for not doing it makes no sense.
