I have a 2022 Road glide special with the 114 motor. 2 friends of mine have a 114, one has a 2021 Ultra Limited and the other has a 2020 Road Glide Ultra limited, they both have engine noise, one is worse than the other(the 2020 RG UltraLimited), the dealer's fix for that is to keep selling him stage upgrades, which has not fixed the problem. The other guy just deals with it, mine sounds normal to me.
My wife test rode a 2024 Heritage with the 114 yesterday, I went with her on my RGS, I pulled up next to her at a light to ask her what she thinks of it when I noticed the rattling/engine noises coming from the heritage(I could hear it over the sound of my bike running, stock, with reinhart pipes), she made a comment to me on the engine noise of the heritage without me saying anything when we pulled back into the dealership. We both brought it to the sales guys attention, he indicated that yeah, they all do that, it's normal, and I'm probably just used to the engine noise of my 114 because I ride it all the time.
What gives? Do some 114s make engine noises and some don't? When I test rode a couple of RGS's in 2022 I didn't hear all that racket coming from the motor on any of them, including mine when I bought it.
When I bought my first M8 114 I took it back to the dealer because of excessive noise. It's just the M8 is louder and sounds different than earlier motors. And I wear hearing aids so the noise was much louder but normal.
The noise you hear is from the piston wrist pin slop to the con-rod small end. There's too much clearance in some of the interfaces. A thicker oil might help, but the best fix is to R&R the wrist pin the proper size. The sound is caused by the wrist pin "hitting" the con-rod bearing, instead of "pushing" it's "hitting with force."
As miles progress, the noise will get louder and louder, until bearing failure.
