Default '05 vs. '06

Alright guys. I need your help. I am considering trading in my superglide for a new night train. I have heard all of the rumors regarding the new EPA regulations and I started to panic. Are the new regulations going to be extremely stringent? I guess my main question is, should I bite the bullet now and go with the '05, or wait for the '06's to come out? If I waited, what types of differences could I be looking at?

My dealer told me that, internally, there will be no differences. The dealers will be required to sell the new bikes in stock configuration (pipes, intake), but aside from that, everything will stay the same. Does that sound right to you, or is he bull!@%^ing me?

Financially, it would make more sense for me to wait, but I don't want to have any surprises if I go for an '06.

I think what your dealer is saying is true. I also think there are quite a few items up in the air that noone really knows at this time. FIrst of all, here is about the clearest link in simple form I have found:

http://www.webbikeworld.com/Motorcyc...bike-rules.htm

What concerns me is that it APPEARS that you can buy a 2006 and do what you want. The critical fcator is whether you will be required to pass emissions TESTING to a different standard if your bike is 2006....... I think you are going to see carbs go away, and efi will become almost an absolute. Will we be able to continue to use the "Downloads" and race tuners and the like...I think yes. It may be as simple as having your "fun" program which may not pass legal standards, and the testing program for passing. Would your super bagger with rineharts pass when you regress the program- probably not.

In the end, it is likened to removing the cat converter from yur car, as many did in the early days. Those cars today will NOT pass emmissions testing, and if it was factory equip- it will be required based on MODEL YEAR. We bought a new 2005 Ultra for that reason- hopefully exemption based on model year.

hey Bruce, thanks for the info; I didn't hear a thing about this - VERY glad I bought an '05. This really sucks - something like with cars, I always try to buy '67 or older to avoid any potential for emissions testing (67 was last year for no emissions equip. everywhere except Calif., other than minor equip, like a PCV system - my understanding is that Calif. tests from 66 to new, may have changed by now - I don't keep up with this stuff as much)

You're doin' good, buyin' the older cars. Aside from the regs concerning the new factory bikes, it's gonna get viscious when you go to build a custom. Yer gonna be allowed one in your lifetime. There are all kinds of special rules for small manufacturers, and other rules for small shops building bikes, too. Methinks the older bikes, and even frames, with serial numbers will be nice items to have.

Thanks for the link, Bruce. This looks to be pretty unfortunate.

I realize that times are changing but I don't have to like it. It seems like there is a group of people just waiting around trying to find something that the average citizen likes to do so they can step in and make some changes that fouls up the whole fun of it. I have seen a lot of pollution in the air that wasn't caused by motorcycles, but I don't see anything being done about that. It seems that they like messing around with the little people that aren't wealthy enough or strong enough to stand up and do anything about it. Sometimes, it just gets a little old.

yea, and isn't it funny that the government doesn't require emissions tests on the big rigs that just POUR that **** into the air (read=BIG MONEY / TAXES to give politicians the BIG raises they do, of course, deserve, and hire more help for the hired help). OOOPS, did I say that ... [sm=bs.gif]

let me get back to that happy place with all my bestest friends ...

Hey there's no dought that the longer you wait the deeper epa is going to sink their nasty claw's into the motorcycle industry and to tell you the truth if your waiting for maybe a new model to come out you might never buy a new one, so my advice would be to buy now.[sm=smiley20.gif]
