I was on a long trip. In the middle of no where. The lights started to dim. I pulled off the road in a little town. Battery D-E-A-D, dead! Investigation revealed the primary tensioner shoe had broken filled the windings in the alternator and it shorted out. I got a guy at a gas station to put a charge on the battery and rode to an auto parts store where I purchased a solar trickle charger. I pulled the fuses on all unecessary equipment and hooked the charger to the battery, put the seat back on and rode all the way home. The battery was fully charged when I got home. I repaired it. Now I carry that little solar panel in my tool kit. Just a thought.[sm=goodidea.gif]

On a trip to Maine one of the Wingers we were with alternator died. Well we were stuck. (if you've ever been to Maine you know what I mean.)
To make a long story short, we found a small MC repair shop that sold us a spare battery, put it in one guys side bag and ran wires to his battery. We got all the way home swapping the batterys back and forth. A PIA but worked! That was a few years ago and I don't think solor cell chargers were around much. Woulda been much easier...
