Unhappy Getting My Bike From Michigan To Idaho

Back surgery will prevent me from any riding until next spring. In late September and early October, we are moving from Michigan to Idaho, just after my surgery. The problem that I have is how to get the bike from one to the other. We won't be able to get it into the truck we'll use, so I need to find a way to move/ship/ride the bike there. Although I prefer to ride it myself, that is entirely out of the question. So, does anyone here have any experience with the commercial movers of bikes? That looks like my only viable option. But I also have the problem of winter storage to face. I could store the bike at my dealer (not sure though), bike would have to be 'winterized,' then tucked safely away. I've never stored the bike anywhere other than my garage. Always wanted to work on it over the winter. Any suggestions are appreciated.

You don't have a pick-up or (gasp!) trailer you can throw it into?

Or....you could offer someone you trust to ride it out there for you.

No, neither, and the Penske truck we've rented (26') will be full to the brim. As for a trusted friend to ride it there, no friends (really). As for my back, it feels much better when I look at your signature picture!

Bike shipping is a tad expensive. Can you rent a small trailer from Penske to hook up to the box truck? Thanks That's my chick. Hopefully get some updated photos soon.

He's right. Your best bet is to rent a small trailer from Penske and put the bike in that. It's not really made for that, so you have to be a little imaginative with tie down. But that's the cheapest way to do it.

The best way to get it there is to ride it... I'll volunteer!!

Seriously, it will be expenisve... it used to be 700-800'ish when gas was still less than $2 a gallon ... but there are movers who specialize in shipping. Just google "motorcycle shipping" and some names come up:

http://www.funtransport.com/ (affiliated with an Allied Van Lines franchise)

http://www.motorcycleshippers.com/

http://www.haulbikes.com/

Just make sure to get the right quote, door-to-door.

Good luck. Let us know what you do.

After I checked several motorcycle shipping companies, I decided to ride the bike west next spring. By then, my back will be fine. In the meantime, I'll store my bike at my dealer here in MI since they will be doing some work on the bike over the winter. I want to thank all of you who volunteered to ride it for me.

I used Haul Bikes (Milwaukee, WI) to haul a 05 RG from Milwaukee to Phoenix, AZ. Cost was a bit over $600. U-haul has a trailer 5 x 9 open that would cost almost $550 for a one-way move.
