I own a 1990 FXSTC. I just purchased this bike and it is my first Harley. I am having a problem with the bike back firing threw the carb when the bike is trying to maintain speed no matter what gear I'm in. The bike runs great as long as I'm accelerating. The bike is stock and has duel fish tail pipes.
I just went to get it smogged and it failed the Hydrocarbin test with a reading of 2201 ppm if this helps in any way.
Does any one have any ideas. I would greatly appreciate any input that can be offerd.
What kind of carb is it ? is it jetted properly for the pipes(free flowing pipes would want more fuel) most carb manufacturers will have some sort of documentation on a website or in the instructions when the carb was purchased. is your intake manifold tight(not sucking air this is very bad can cause you to burn up a piston) have you checked the condition of your spark plugs this will give you an indication of your burn if they are black and dirty you are sending to much fuel into the motor if the are like a white and ashy color you are to lean the should be almost like a brown color but you can also check this on a spark plug manufacturers website I would think they would have some diagrams of properly burning plugs also if you are running a bigger jet or jets plural do you have a good plug to burn of the extra fuel your motor wants with the exhaust you are running I don't know for sure if any of this will help you but this should be some places to start that you can check your self without spending to much of your hard earned dough.
Spray some starter fulid on the intake manifold and see if the scoot dies...sounds like you may have a leaking intake gasket...easy fix if that is the case.

This would be my best guess, it shouldnt die though .... the idle should increase....use WD-40 or Carb Spray...I personally dont like Either....spray it frfom the horn side
