Default Replacing Harley covers

I purchased Harley chrome themed covers for my air filter, timing cover, and Derby cover for my 2003 Hertiage classic . When I went to remove the stock covers, I had a problems with screws stripping and breaking. I used tools that I purchased from my local Harley dealer. Is this a common problem with the "lock tight" installation at the factories? Will Harley Corporate cover the cost of re-tooling?

I've never had an issue with breaking stuff on my scooots when taking em apart. As for the motor co helping you , doubt it. Maybe you should pay someone to do the work next time.

Couple of weeks ago when I was in the HD shop, I asked the head mechanic what the difference between red and blue loctite was. After explaining it, he told me about how difficult it is to get the screws out of the motor. He said he has had to help more than one guy who broke off a screw head or stripped it when taking out screws that were put it in with loctite.

What I got out of it was, be very careful and meticulous when working these screws, and make sure the size of the wrench/allen/hex tool that I'm working with is exactly the right size.

I've had trouble with the aircleaner cover screws on both my Sporty and my 'Glide. The Sporty screwa froze and turned the nuts in the plastic backplate (major hassle); the 'Glide twisted one of the inner fillter screws off (had to drill and re tap). This is obviously a poor design area for HD. The one that twisted off was a very poor grade of screw (compressed buffalo dung, I think??).

What is the dif,. Mac? I forget. 10-4 on the screws. Went to take off my backrest the other day and didn't look closely enuff. Used a hex instead of a torx and stripped the inside of the screw. Fortunately there was a bolt on the back which was accessible, so no big prob., but it sure is easy to do.

Broke off a footpeg once trying to twist it off but have helped several friends change covers this year (you know how those new guys always want to change covers) and had no problem.. I used a 3/8 socket wrench (that gives you more leverage without slipping out).

Blue loctite = soft hold
Red loctite = hard hold

If I remember right, the red is more of a permanent locktite while the blue is made so it can be loosened. Basically, the red stuff is a bear to break loose.

Use heat on the red when you want to remove it.
