Fuel gage was working fine the other day...I was ridding in a pretty severe rain storm on way home. Put bike away...Today gauge stays on "E" and the miles to empty slott only reads "---" After poking around on here..I check for error codes and got "b1004" but am still perplexed to find what does that mean...I.E. bad gauge? or something in the tank? or what.....I took fairing off and checked for bad wires and the connections on the gauge-- all seem fine....Any help would be appreciated......I would like to fix myself if its something simple vs. the dealer..

Well, I went ahead and ordered a new fuel gauge $60.00....I figure it would cost me more than that just to have the dealer look at it....if it don't fix the problem...I guess I just replaced the POS gauge that has fogged since day 1 to the point of not being able to read anyway.... I will update if this fixes the problem once installed
Not that anyone cared but I figured I would update incase someone searches for this problem later....but the gauge appears to have been the problem..$60.00 and just installed it seems OK now.. Cleared the code and it didn't come back so.....b1004 seems fixed...
What is POS gauge? How much trouble was it to replace the fuel gauge after you received it? My fuel gauge suddenly is going to full, then back to something close to half tank while I'm riding. Meanwhile the DTE reading is going crazy -- gaining miles from 100 to 180 when I know I really have about 50 miles left in the tank. My diag code is b1004, and shows a part number of 67516-09. This is on my 2010 FLHXSE. Any insight or help?

I've been having some issues with a hand built custom, using an 04 ultra wire harness and an 08 Speedo, I came here looking for an answer, and it seems I found it and have a solution for others as well, First the part number is your speedo pn, if it is the Speedo your reading the error on. I know some people can read these codes on their stereo if so equipped.
and the B1004 error code is the yellow /white wire going in from fuel gauge. It could be the gauge, But it my case it was just a poor connection of this yellow/white wire. Check the pin on the wire, they bell mouth and don't get a solid connection, very temperamental. Hope this helps someone.
Thanks to Musikal51 and krptonite for your info. That helps.
My dealer said the b1004 (fuel level sensor open) was caused by a break in one of four wires in the wiring harness between the fuel level sensor (in the tank) running under the console to the seat then to the ECM. He ordered a new harness and I installed it (just snap in). But that didn't fix my erratic fuel guage and DTE which sometimes reads --- and sometimes reads about right, all while riding.
Mid-July, I took the 2010 FLHXSE back to the dealer. He replaced the fuel sensor in the tank itself. Didn't fix it. Then he replaced the float in the tank. Didn't fix it. He's guessing of course. Now I'm out $280. Only thing left is the gauge itself. That $60 item. I'm ordering it and installing it myself next.
I'm having a similar issue on new Heritage. The gauge says empty and flashes Lo Range, when the tank is full. The dealer has had my bike for 2 days and says to check back tomorrow. They said it's a wiring issue with the bike. I figured it'd be a quick fix by replacing the gauge, but I guess not.
