Default Check engine light on

This morning I started up my bike for a ride and as I pulled out of the driveway I had no power. Tried to roll on the throttle and nothing. Engine still running but no power and the check engine light came on. After about 20 seconds I got the slightest bit of power when giving it full throttle. Shut the engine down and let it sit for 30 seconds, started it back up and had full normal throttle and power. Rode for an hour and no problems. For some reason my thought was maybe I was not getting enough air flow into my air filter. Took it off and found it a little bit dirty but not bad. But what I did notice was a greasy film on the gasket and on the inside plating of the air filter.

Is this normal or is it a sign of a bigger issue?

Also noticed the 2 lines feeding into the air filter had a greasy film on them as well, especially the one on the right.

Thanks
John

Details on your bike would help narrow it down. Sounds to me like "limp mode," provided your bike is TBW. If so, check the TBW connector (2 wires coming out of it) on top of your throttle body behind the air cleaner. Pull the connector, clean it up, throw in some dielectric grease and make sure it's tight. A loose or bad connection here will cause the symptoms you describe.

There are a few threads on how to change the pins to a larger size for a tighter fit. Just search "Limp Mode" and you'll find tons of info.

What year and model of bike?

if it's a DBW bike, you might need to check the twist grip sensor (and or wiring) and the throttle position sensors.

What is the exact diagnostic trouble code that is being thrown?
