June 11, My 'cuz and I are gonna cruise fro Battle Creek Mich over to Milwaukee. We are thinking about taking the ferry from Muskegon over the lake to avoid the Chicago traffic, but at over $100 a pop for the boat ride we might ride all the way. Then our return route will be up through Green Bay, through the UP and down over the bridge. Anyone here done this before? Then we are considering a ride out to the Belt mountains in Montan or Wyoming with a ride through Sturgis and Deadwood.
took the ferry last summer. Saves you a ton of miles and time. For you it will save approxiemitly 170 miles over going to Muskegon to get on the boat, versus going around to Millwaukee, so it may or may not be worth the time savings. Its a 2 hour boat ride, and very relaxing journey. For me it was well worth it as we were going to the arally in Millwaukee and then up to the UP and back down to the Brighton area. We would have needed at least another day, plus all the problems of riding thru the Mess that is Chicago and the traffic that entails.
I am currently planning a trip to the Black hills for my wife and I. I will use the ferry on the way out, in order to save a full day of riding and the headache that is Chitown Traffic. By taking the last ferry of the night ( about 11 pm) I can leave Novi after work and save that full day of riding as well as a vacation day. I will start out on Saturday morning from Millwuakee thus adding a full day of time available to the trip.
I took the ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon last October and they most certainly do provide tiedowns, nice ones at that! The total cost during off season was 105 for me and Harley and I would highly recommend the experience. I have ridden through Chitown and it is not worth 200 dollars much less 100 and change. Enjoy the ride
90 or 94 however you come in.... to 294 headed northto 94 again. Get off 90/94 before the city and you can catch it again north of the city. Or you can catch 88 from 294 if your going to head west.
Another consideration is the SS Badger. It runs betweenLudington, MI and Manitowoc, WI. Bike and rider runs $91 and you need your own tie-downs. It's older andslower than the other service. It's a nice 4 hour cruise if you have the time. If you do a night crossing check out the deckreclining chairs. On a clear night the stars are a sight. It can get cold in the middle of the lake so a blanket is advised if you stay on the deck.
