Hi
Looking for advise on changeing the gearing on a 07 roadking to pull a sidecar, to take a bit of the strain off the motor, thought a couple of extra teeth on the rear pully, but havin trouble findin one.
Any other advise allso wecome. Steering damper, Leading link forks are popular over here in OZ, but look crap!
Thanks Doug
PS, Not too many members declare they're age, somethin I shoiuld be aware of?
Thanks mrdeere, how does it go then riding solo? I imagine it would make crawling in traffic better,I find the standard gearing a bit high, without slipping the clutch a little.
While we've got the primary out,do you think the standard clutch is ok.
The reason I was concentrating on the rear pullys was because I thought the belt might be a weak link. Apparently you can get a heavy duty belt. And I thought changing the final drive would take a bit of presure of the gearbox, what do you, or anyone reading think, any engineers out there?
I've never had any trouble with the standard belts. Ran an '03 with sidecar almost 100k miles and have around 35k on the '08... no problems. If one ever breaks though, I might go with the heavy duty. As for the front end, I saw a sidecar rig a couple of weeks ago with a trike triple tree installed. The owner said he didn't have to make any modifications to do it, but you might want to check it out with a dealer to see what might have to be done. Can't tell you what to do about the clutch, but when I upgraded to a 103 ci, I put in a heavier clutch with stronger springs.
Here is a good friends of mine 1988 FLHS with over 220,000 on it right after he got back from his trip with his son to Alaska this pass summer. Look at all he has tied on it. He has had the BIG sidecar on it since about 120,000 miles runs stock belts and gearing. He bought this bike new and I have done most of the work on it since. Yes at 192,000 we had to put a new motor in it which is not bad at all! He has over 1/2 million miles on Harley s and counting other bikes he has owned has over 3/4 of a million miles.
46U, that rig would have lower gearing than an 07. I know my 07 could really use a little lower gears when the hack is on it. I just haven't decided which gear to change yet. LOL

What is your first gear ratio? I thought when they went to the 6 speed that 6 gear is 1 to 1 just like the 5 speed and all they did is go smaller on the rear pulley and the changed the gearing in the transmission so first was the same or close to what the 5 speed is. Will do some checking.
What sidecar do you have? Are you going to keep it on the bike and never take it off or are you going to use it as a rig and solo? My HD side car comes with a steering damper. If you are going to leave the sidecar on they make raked triple trees some prefer.
I am not the best on gearing but from what I see in the manuals there is not much different between first gear on a 5 speed and first gear on the 6 speed. I will know more once I get my hack on my 02 ultra. One of the problems is there are 3 ways they measure gearing, internal, effective and overall. On the 5 speed in the HD manuals it has internal and on the 6 speed they have over all.
But I guess it does not matter what gearing a person has they need it geared for their use. OK you say you need a lower gearing. Are you having problems taking off or when you are cursing down the road? Do they make a smaller compensating sprocket this would be the easiest way if they do. Doing the rear pulley if you can find one you might all so have to change the belt.
Yep, I have trouble on take offs, and if it's on an incline it is almost impossible.
I have been taking the hack off and using it only on the long trips with the wife, but will soon be leaving it on pretty much all the time, so I think the gearing change is a must do sson.
