What, if anything, is best used for cleaning the fuel injectors? Any suggestions for periodicly runningsaid cleaner through the system?
I'm a bit leary about putting additives into my fuel system~ I did this once with my metric and found the fuel pump filter clogged up within weeks~ Wasn't cheap to replace either, so I can only wanna imagine what that mistake would cost me from High-Dollar service department~
I've been reading this froum for almost a year now, and I have never seen this subject addressed. Must not be that important. After all, look what happened to your metric.
That's a good point about todays fuels... hadn't even cross my mind~ No problems here to speak of.. just looking more for a preventative maintenance.. before a problem could arise~ Thanks for the feedback... [8D]
We made up a injector cleaning kit. I had a few that where running rather rough. It is a pressure can that is made by Berry. You add the cleaner and hook it up and the engine runs until the can is empty. It worked on a few and others it did not. As for what is in fuel?? Sorry but I would not make any claims as to what is "really" in todays fuel. Being that most EFI cars respond to injector cleaning, stands to reason that a bike would as well. But I have not seen any kit other than the one we made. It has been helpful thus far for us in the shop.
Go to your local Autozone or Pep Boys, etc. and look for a small clear bottle with a white label, called, "SEA FOAM."
I have hadVERY GOOD results using this product.
In all my injected vehicles, I occasionally throw in a some injector cleaner. Does it work? Hard to say. But my truck has 90K miles on it and still idles so smooth you can't hardly feel it. Still gets the same mileage it did at 20K miles. So maybe it does.
I like B-12 Chemtool andChevron Techron. I've heard good things about Sea Foam, but never actually used it.
In my carbed bike, I put in a littloe cleaner about every 9K-10K miles.

Yep, SeaFoam is really good stuff. Used it in my bike and truck.
FYI they also make a TransTune that works wonders in bringing a automatic tranny back from the dead. There was a fairly recent thread about SeaFoam in the Touring forum.
To PROPERLY clean injectors, they must be either dis-assembled or reverse flowed.....
An injector is nothing more than a plunger with a point, pressurizing fuel and forcing it through a funnel....
Do you REALLY think that contamination that has made it through the filter is going to be dislodged from a SMALLER and TIGHTER orifice that is no bigger than a pinhole????
As far as Detergents and additional additives in fuel, take a look at what the ingrediants REALLY are... All are petroleum distillates for removal of varnish... but it doesn't help in breaking down the hard particles of fuel line wear, small pieces of sand or dirt....
