Hey there,
I have a 1999 Sportster 1200S. Went to ride one day and noticed that when I turned the ignition switch on, the headlights were dim. And when trying to start the bike, all you get is click-click-click, but no engine turnover. So i thought i might have a low battery. Hadn't ridden in like 1.5 months (lots of school right now)
So i got a battery tender and charged it up. Battery tender seems to say it's charged up fine. So I try to start the bike. Turn on the ignition. Headlights are normal brightness. I press the start button, and EVERYTHING goes dark. No click. No nothing. Turn the ignition off, then on. And nothing at all. Zilch. No lights, no action, no nothing.
Checked all the fuses. Those all seem fine. I can't really check the master circuit breaker. I've read a bunch of posts on here and have some good places to start to look. Going to get a multimeter to check continuity for certain places and voltage of battery. (The battery is only a couple months old.)
Just wondering if anyone might have any pointers? Voltage Regulator? Bank sensor? Ignition?
Thanks,
Mark
If everything went out you may have a bad battery connection. Otherwise, a lead acid battery, even a new one, left discharged for more than a few days it will become sulfated (the plates get coated with a sulfer-like material that prevents electrons from flowing). Your new battery should show a little over 12 volts when fully charged. If after you are sure the cable connections are good (both at the battery and at their other ends where they connect to the starter and ground) and the battery voltage goes from 12 volts to zero or close to that when you put a load on it then you probably need a new battery.
