Actually, knock sensors do not exist on a Harley.
Definitely wrong. They don't have the old clunky sonic ones that the older Chryslers had, but they have an ion sensing system that detects it as it begins, potentially before you could ever hear it. It's one of the more advanced systems of it's type on the market.

It's so friggin advanced that we have an entire sector of the market dedicated to retuning the stock computer!

P.S. I just wanted to add that this tech has been around for at least 8 years. Delphi came up with this for Isuzu. Does anyone else use ion sensing for tuning purposes?

If you think the stock Ecm is so great I will let you keep it and play with it. Me I will keep my TM A/T and let it do its thing. It runs a whole lot better on the TM than it did the sert.
One big thing that a lot of people don't realize is a ser of pipes can kill a bikes performance and the way it runs.

Well, I learn something new every day. In a nutshell, how does the ion system work?

Also, a question(s) comes to mind. Why is there still pinging with a stock machine, and why the requirement for premium gasoline? I have a Jeep with the 4.7l HO which has higher compression than the standard 4.7l. Although premium gasoline is recommended for this reason, the sonic type knock sensors allow you to use lower octane if you like. Of course some performance and efficiency is lost, since when pinging is detected, the timing is retarded.

Well, greatly simplified the ignition system senses how mych current it takes to bridge the gap on the spark plugs. The air/fuel charge and pressures inside the cylinder affect this and a preignition event (pinging) affects it even more. The computer "sees" a harmful high pressure event and can retard the timing to help avoid it (or other responses). Here's how Delphi explains it:

http://delphi.com/manufacturers/auto...gnsys/ionized/

Also, a question(s) comes to mind. Why is there still pinging with a stock machine, and why the requirement for premium gasoline?
The system will only retard the timing so far, there is a band of allowable parameters. If a bike is being flogged badly or is running bad gas, there's no amount of octane or retarded timing that will prevent the pinging. The higher octane is required because these motors are relatively high compression and they are air cooled. A hotter running engine or one with more compression is more prone to pinging. Higher octane helps that.

Your Jeep has a water cooled engine too so the timing can be retarded to a greater degree because overheating can be compensated for to a greater degree. I'm sure if you wanted to, you could get that thing to ping non-stop. The way some folks ride their bikes you'd think they were trying to.

I complained to my service guy about my NT pinging, he called HD and after about a week or so finally got a response. Supposedly HD is coming out with a new download next month to address the pinging issue. And yes, it will be free.

I noticed my stock '07 FLHX pinged a little. After I did the stage 1 download, s/e a/c, stock pipes no more pinging.
