cold start problems Road King 2000
I have a 2000 Road King Classic with Magneti Marelli fuel injection.
The engine displacement has been increased from 88 ci to 95 ci. It has a K&N air filter and a different exhaust installed.
Since I took over the motorcycle from my uncle, it has been very difficult to start when cold. I had to hold the throttle open for about 1.5 minutes to keep it running.
When warm, it ran perfectly.
I took it to a workshop to have the idle speed adjusted.
After picking it up, it stayed running after a cold start, but it had noticeable misfires when letting off the throttle and downshifting. I also had the feeling that it had significantly less power; above 120 km/h, there was no power at all.
I then read something here in the forum and found the following video.
I followed these settings, and it ran much better afterward. The popping in the exhaust was almost completely gone, and the performance was better again. However, it stalled again the next day after a cold start.
I then turned the cold idle screw further in until the engine stayed running on a cold start. The result is more popping and less power again.
What did I do wrong? Do I need to increase the idle speed when the engine is warm at warm idle screw ?
Was the reset by pulling the fuses missing? The pin of the IAC (Integrated Air Control) wasn't touching the screw when cold after the adjustment as shown in the video. Therefore, the idle speed couldn't be increased at all.
I look forward to your ideas and help.
Best regards, David from Germany
