I have a new stator and voltage regulator replaced that was defective. Battery is good and fully charged.Rarely takes over 10-15 minutes with tender to show fully charged. My question is whether or not I'm most likely having starter problems.
Upon hitting the starter button, many times I get one "rrrrr" sound of the starter followed by a pause of a second or so then "rrrr rrrr rrrr" then it starts. With all these electrical components replaced am I most likely looking at starter problems? The dealer wants 5-6 hundred dollars for the job. Is this something that can be done with the rapair manual fairly simple for less money? Or are there a bunch of special tools and tolerances that have to be minded.
To be sure, you should have the battery Load Tested first.
If that's OK, then an Amp Draw test of the starter.
Both could be done by an Indy or even an auto shop cheaply.
To remove/replace the starter you need to remove Primary Cover, if that doesn't bother you, then the rest, with the service manual, should easy.
Note: Engine mods, like high compression pistons can overload stock starters and a high torque starter will be needed.
From what I remember when I did mine,you have to take the whole outer cover off so you can get to the jack bolt. Removing just the disc won't do it. you then might need to get a new gasket and 1 quart of oil. Good Luck!

You remembered well.
On a Softtail, you MAY have to move/remove the oil tank, but I'm not sure on that.
That why you must have the HD Service Manual.
