I had to replace my battery last summer. I don't get to ride as often as I'd like so the bike sits most of the winter. Well I tried to take her out today and the batt. is dead, so I jumped it with a car battery I had sitting around. I got it started, unhook the jumpers and it starts idleing faster after about 30 seconds then the engine dies. So I do it again, same thing. The third time I put the voltage meter on the battery while it was running, it reads like 7 volts, and falling.
If your battery has sat for extended periods of time, it is probably sulfated and will need to be charged very slowly for about 24 hours with a trickle charger to see if it can be boiled off. If you are sucessfull it should work and will hold a charge then. Remember that a discharged battery will freeze and damage the battery because when discharged the acid turns back to water and that freezes. Pick up a battery tender and use it when you are not riding it.
Well it was about 60 degrees with sunshine today!! That doesn't happen often in January, in Ohio. And it happens very seldom when I'm available to ride.
Wanting a fast solution I pulled my battery and took it to my local HD dealer where I purchased it, and many other things including the bike. They hooked my battery to there little tester which said "replace battery". Even though the battery was out of the six month over the counter warranty, they happily handed me another and sent me on my way. A smart move on their part, if you ask me.
Well I put it in, my little volt meter said 12.82. I started it, my little volt meter said 14.41. Looks like the peoblem is solved to me.
So I got to ride.
