Default Melted Positive Battery Post

I have a 2002 Road King and am having trouble with cooking batteries. I have a 95" motor with HTCC headsand compression releases. If the bike doesn't start right away and has to keep cranking, it melts the positive battery post. It has taken me 2new batteries to realize this is a reoccurring problem. Any trouble shooting suggestions would be much appreciated.

Don't crank the starter more than 12 seconds, make sure the battery terminals are tight. Do you have a SERT with the program and cables? if so we can get inthere and adjust the cranking fuel so this bike will start.

The post melts before 12 seconds of cranking. The bike usually starts within one or two cranks of the starter. Could the starter be bad? OR is this a common issue with high compression heads?

thanks, Ben

I had this problem on a softail. I put a second 10ga ground wire directly to the starter from the battery. I never had a problem since. You can also try toclean and put some locktite on the battery bolts, mine would lossen up from vibrations and start to heatup after a few months.

Melting of this post is an indication of high resistance. It may be a bad connection at the cable to the battery or could even be a bad cable. I have seen some cables fail at the cable to terminal end due to a failing crimp or corrosion.

Not enough copper in the cable will do that too, even more with bigger motors/starters.

Get a set of these cables and they will end your problems.

Clean the positive post on the starter, it is exposed to the elements and is usually corroded.
