definitely associated with the start and run switch on the handle bars. This time it cut out and would not come back on. When I played with the switch (took it apart) it was short circuiting and causing the red light to blink rapidly.
am riding a 01 FLSTC. didn't encounter anything like you said but had a little problem recently. not sure what to make of it so had to ask u guys:
usually my bike starts immediately when i fire it up but recently it seems the engine fails to fire up the first time when i press the ignition switch. This happened on two occasions. I had to press the ignition button a 2nd time before the engine will start running.
is it normal for this to happen? or are my spark plugs dying soon? mileage is abt 40000km now. this is a 2nd hand bike and my first harley so i am not too sure. Appreciate any advice Thanks!

Some times when its really hot out and I just shut off the bike and then restart it, like a pit stop. Otherwise, I'd ask when you had it serviced last.
hmmm...bike is serviced at 5000km intervals. I just had it serviced yesterday morning though, mechanic said it might be the fuel filter but he changed the air filter upon inspection as it looked really dirty.
he told me it might be the cause of it but i am crossing my fingers. anyway my engine fires up on first push of button so far. its the intermittent problems which are hard to nail i suppose
then again..this doesn't seem like a big issue does it?
Just to update this, the problem is still getting traced.
I have the bike up on a lift and if I move the handlebars lock to lock, the entire electrical system shuts down for a second, like a short. If I keep it in the middle, it stays on.
So keeping the front end straight, I began feeling around and found that if I squeeze the main harness about 2" before it goes under the gas tank, I can cause it to shut off.
So now I know WHERE the problem is, I just can't get to it as its under the plastic sleeve the harness is in. I was thinking of removing the gas tank to trace the harness more, but that looks like a big mess.
After disconnecting the harness from all connectors on the faring, I was able to pull it through and out of the fairing. This allowed me just enough room to slide back the covering. Sure enough, there were two badly pinched wires. Wire one is the radio antenna and its coating and ground sheathing is all but gone, but the radio worked fine so I just taped it up. There was another Red and Black wire that still had its protective coating on it, but you could see it completely pinched. A closer examination of this wire and you could feel the wire broken inside. I cut it, stripped it and put on a butt connector. Not my first choice, but only solution at this point.
The dealer had done front end work last year. I am thinking something happened to this at that point though I know it will be very hard to prove, still worth a call into them to see if they are willing to do anything.
