I have a 99 FXDWG had it since new, just put a battery in it and the bike died while i was riding it last night. Seems like the battery is not being charged while riding, is this the regulator? Does anyone know how easy it is to replace and how much it is? Thanks for any and all replies. MW
If it's your voltage regulator, it's extremely easy to replace. You may want to check your service manual for the electrical tests to determine if it's bad. If it is, it's only held on by two bolts. Just remove the bolts, unplug the wires, and you're good to go.
1. Regulator. Use a test light with the ground grounded either to the frame or neg post of battery. Touch the probe end first to one side of the plug that connects to the stator. You should get no light. If you get any kind of light the regulator is toast. Do the same for the other post on the plug.
2. Stator check. you need an Ohm meter and set to Rx1 scale. with the two probes touching each of the terminals comming from the stator you should not read higher than .2 Now check by grounding the negative probe and touch positive probe to one terminal in the stator connector and then the other. if you get any kind of a reading, the stator is toast.
