Ignition/Tuner/ECM/Fuel InjectionNeed advice on ignition issues? Questions about a tuner? Have questions about a EFI calibration or Fuel Injection? Tips on Engine Diagnostics, how to get codes, and what they mean. Find your answers here.
I currently bought a 2000 FLHRCI that is basically stock. I am not really sure if any engine mods were done but I plan to do some mods in the future. For now I need to resolve a problem. The problem is this: There is a set of unknown brand name mufflers on the bike. During de-acceleration within a certain range of rpms, I get an amazing amount of popping. The plugs are fine and no leaks in pipes were found. This popping also occurs (rarely) during upshifts between gears when I let off the throttle. This is only one loud pop then everything is fine. I have read several threads on basic re-mapping vs SERT etc. For the near future, it would seem that it would be better to take it to the local HD dealer to re-map it for now then when (8-10 months from now) I plan to start my mods then I would buy the SERT with new mufflers and other preformance upgrades. Wouldn't I need to know what kind of parts I have on the bike in order to properly use the SERT software or does it not matter? Any advice from the pros on this would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!
You would need to know what exhaust is on the bike to use a map in a SERT or PCIII, etc. Get the tuner and have it tuned then add mods later. If you cannot find anyone that can tell you what the mufflers are then you can always generally find a cheap set on ebay to get by until you can get what you want.
Dawg, what air cleaner cover is that on the bike. I really like it.[sm=smiley20.gif]
That is the HD police commemorative collection trim insert that I use as the cover over my Big Sucker air cleaner kit. You can use any of the HD trim inserts over the K&N filters if you run an open air cleaner.
There is a screw hole in the middle of your stock setup. With the insert you get a 5 point star shape that has a hole in the middle and a hole in each point. The star gets screwed onto the hole in your filter via the middle hole and then the trim piece attaches to the star with the other 5 holes.

You don't need to know exactly, no.
Don't spend money for a download if you are planning more later. Put your money into the SERT. You can choose a map from the cd that is close and then tune for the best run.
The SERT has a diagnostic mode. You can set it in record mode, put the laptop in a satchel or saddle bag and ride. Then go back and review the data. You can then take what you find out and modify the map you are currently running. Once modified flash the ECU and do it again until you get good data runs.
