If you are using a stock stator designed for your bike you should not need a rotor too unless there are visible signs of damage. The magnets are permanent.
Sometimes you may have a stator that falls apart and will damage the rotor, but it would be obvious.
Often stators go bad because they are under rated for the updates and additional electric items added like running lights, or additional tail lights. They also die when the battery stops holding a good charge and draw too much from the stator while the bike is running. And then there's simple things like the regulator plug corroded, bad ground, or damaged / shorting wiring.
Be sure you trouble shoot it thoroughly before cracking open the primary.
One hint of a bad stator is burnt transformer smell in the primary oil.
