weird brake light behavior

weird brake light behavior
i'm experiencing some weird behavior with the brakelight on my 2003 XLH 883:
• whenever the bike is running the brake light is on/lit as if i'm braking.
• when i pull in the front brake lever, the light actually dims!
• when i step on the rear brake pedal, nothing changes.
i've never touched any circuit that has anything to do with the brake/tail light, so i don't know what could possibly be causing this. is there anything obvious i should check before resorting to bringing it to the dealer?
