Just posting to thanks those of you who were good enough to offer advice and encouragement to me while I went through the process of installing a tach (a DHT-1000-DUC, to be precise) on my 2006 Deuce - you know who you are (especially one kind soul whose initials are JD - truly above and beyond, thank you!).
I had ZERO luck connecting to the "number three" location in the speedo connector (39B) - oh, I got the wire into the plug, but no signal - which is not surprising because there's nothing on the other side of the connection. Don't know how this could work for folks; your bikes have got to be set up different than mine.
So I ran the signal wire back to position three on the ECM itself. Didn't even havea pin terminal by then; ruined them allin the speedo process. But I twisted the wires and inserted them and picked up the signal as pretty as you please.
Tach works, at least at idle. Given the weather in the Boston area, it's gonna be at least a few days before I can hit the road again...
I'm glad you got it going. My #3 position on the speedo connector look like its empty on the other side, but it sure works. I have no idea how and I doubted it when I connected it.
i went thru the same s**t when i installed my tach on my Dyna. I couldn't get a signal at the ECU but got it off the speedo. Wonder what third world country the guy who wrote the HD instructions came from? They are really useless and totally confusing.
Can anybody out and let me in on were exactly they tie there Signal for there tachometer wire.I have a Harley 2 1/2 mini tach. A couple of sites said to tie it in to the light green wire with a violet stripe. That comes off my speedo plug. But when I did this the tach. Needle bounced all over the place. And that was with out the bike started. Just on ignition. All others say especially Harley dealers connect it to pin #3 on the speedo plug or at the ECM at pin #3 . But were are these locations? I do not have any numbers on my pins under my dash and cannot see any in the ECM area can someone give me any type of advice on where and how the signal wire for this mini tack goes
On my '04 the tach port on the speedo plug is empty, and it was the only empty one. 2nd or 3rd port from one side. You will need the the pin on the feed wire on the tach harness if it isn't already there.
