Hi guys, having a small problem with a 1971 XLCH 1000 sportster. The bike decharges itself. The bike has been all rewired, new generator, new regulator. Now we don't know where to go from here. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Apparently it's not charging or appears not to be, see what the battery voltage is with the engine off and then what the voltage is with the engine running at idle and then at slightly rev'ed up. I know you have replaced everything, but sometimes the charging system is good and there is something else that is causing the discharge.
With the generator and regulator hooked up as usual, make a jumper wire and connect one end to the generator "Armature" terminal . Momentarily touch the other end to the positive terminal of the battery and if everything is OK mechanically, this should do it.
I have tried polarized the generator. That didn't work. Also tried the volts as far as the bike running and reving! Totally lost now have no clue why this bike is decharging after 1/2 hour of riding.
Only thing else to try is a continuity check of all the wires in the circuit or the brushes in the generator if you have one hanging up. It may not be that the system is discharging , it may be that it isn't charging at all.
