Check Engine Light and No Codes... Help...
I just picked up a 2003 Electra Glide Classic (FLHTCI) with about 20k miles on it. Everything checked out when I bought it, but within 200 miles of owning it, the check engine light started coming on. It would only come on for a few seconds, and then shut off. I only noticed it on the freeway at cruising speeds, but it's likely that it could have been happening in city traffic and I just not noticed it. The previous owner put in a new battery over the winter, and this evening while trying to pull the codes, I noticed that the connections to the battery were very loose. I tightened them up and I'm sure that they won't be moving now. I've heard of this causing codes to pop up and while it may be the case, I can't get the code to display using any of the methods outlined in this forum or anywhere I can find on the web.
When I start the bike, the check engine light comes on as it usually does when starting any bike that has one and then shuts off. After a few seconds, it comes back on and stays on for about 8 seconds, which to the best of my understanding, indicates that I have a stored code. I tried to pull the code/codes by putting a jumper across pins 1&2 of the data link connector, putting the handlebar switch in the "run" position, and turning the ignition to "on". The light comes on as it usually does when starting, shuts off, then comes back on for about 8 seconds, and that's it. It never flashes or comes back on and I can't figure out how at this point to see what code is stored.
I figure if it was a loose battery connection, that the code will clear after 50 cycles and all will be well, but shouldn't I be able to pull the code anyways to see what it is?
I thank you all in advance.
