well, i was putting a chrome cover on the starter yesterday.. when i went to put the starter back in, the teeth didnt line up.. i didnt realize this when i started cranking it back on, and i ended up cracking the end of the starter.
do i have any other options other than buying a new starter??
this has pretty much ruined my week. the bike was supposed to go in for inspection wednesday and i was gonna finally have it on the road.
yeah, finding a used one would be the best solution... aaactually, the best solution would be pinion gear coming on here and saying not to worry about it, and that its just a cover piece. jbweld it and put it back on.
so yeah. i think finding aused one is more likely.
69sport....
As I am sure you know, the starter cost at J&P is $189. Finding a used end cover alone is probably not going to be easy. Easier is to find a complete used starter. Yours appears to be a Prestolite, rather than a Hatichi, so be sure to get the correct brand. Then inter change the covers if you think your starter is in better shape than the used one.
At present, there are 2 on Ebay.
Item #330135318687 is for Prestolite parts ....current price is $19.
Item #330136001768 is for a complete starter (but drags) and price is $19.99.
Both items have no bids and run another 4 days . I think you should consider getting one of these. If you can snare it for $25 you will do OK.
Regarding the condition of the one you have.......it looks like from the pic that the shaft got into a bind and broke the cover. This cover holds the outboard bearing, and that crack you see is the outline of the bearing outer race I believe. There is no way this will be of service to you because it holds the bearing. At the very least, the out of line bearing will cause the brushes to wear, the armature to hit the field coils which will do more damage etc, etc. I think the material may be cast pewter, so there is no way to easily weld or repair this cover. Try to get one of those on Ebay and let us know what happens.........pg
Thanks for the info. i already have emails to both of those ebay sellers asking about ending the auctions early so i can get this part quick.
thats about what i expected to hear about the part being used as it is. wishful thinking is all. my father called it white metal and said the same thing about welding/jbweld/etc...
seeing those 2 parts on ebay this morning made me feel a bit better. its not like i have to drop another 200 on this thing..
looks like ill try for those 2 ebay items and move my inspection to next week..
Yep, things always happen like they are supposed to. These starter offerings went on Ebay just when you needed them. Talk about good timing.
I would sit by the computer at closing time and then bid just a bit more than you want to pay, to prevent a sniper claiming the item for a song, beating you out by 50 cents. Good luck........pg
yep. i dont think ill have a problem with bidding for these. they seem like low demand type of items, and im prepared topay pretty well considering its eitheroverpay for a used item, or spend 3x as much on my other option.
ohh thats the case for sure. definitely taking my time this time.
here is a question, there is a strap on the starter motor. with the chrome cover on the starter motor, the diameter of the starter is slightly larger. how does one get the strap all the way around the starter? im assuming i dont want to leave it off, although im not sure what purpose it serves.
