Default S&S carb adjustment

OK guys, I think the root of recient problems comes from the mix being too rich. Talked to a buddy who was also the previous owner and he said that it alway ran rich. I want to fix that so I can eliminate that as a source of the problems so I googled and found this...

http://www.bikernet.com/SandS/PageVi...sp?PageID=1198

Seems pretty straight forward and simple but a few things I need cleared up are...

A. Idle mix screw, 1 1/4 turns from lightly seated. Lightly seated against the spring with it compressed or uncompressed and turned which direction.
B.Idle speed screw, 1/2 turn clockwise from engagement point. What exactly is being engaged and how.
C. Accelerator adjustment screw, 2 turns counterclockwise from seated. Again, seated against a compressed or uncompressed spring.

Also, I have the S&S carb manual printed out and from what I read there, it seems like I should only have about 1/2 or so turn of the mixture screw between rich and lean. I can turn that sucker 4 FULL turns before I notice a differenc, and it's not as obvious a difference as I would expect. That can't be right.

Any insight, I plan on calling S&S tomorrow if work load and cell coverage permits but would love to hear for you guys as well.

Thanks,
Rich

Edit: By the way, anyone know what intermediate and main jets come with the Super E stock and how can I tell ifthe main jet that is currently in it is a 66 or a 99. There is no line above or below to indicate orientation.

I had S&S Super E shorty in my -74XLH jets were mainjet #68 and intermedia #295 with
opened EVO -mufflers. S&S recommented #295-320 and #62 - 68.
Check you aircleaner element !
Second check your ignition timing ! Seated poisition turn in until screw stops, DO NOT USE FORCE

Adjusting procedure:
Turn idle up from (idle speed srew) normal 800-1000rpm to about 1200 from idle speed screw
A. Turn idle mix screw in so that engine is running rough/ idle drops, memorice this position
turn idle mix screw out so that engine is running rough/ idle drops memorice this position
correct position is middle of these points then turn 1/2 turns out.
Now idle mixture screw should be about 1 1/2 turns open from seated position, if it's with in
Âą1/2 turns ( 1 to 2 turns open) it's still ok. Otherwise you need to change intermedia jet
too closed = smaller jet, too open larger jet.

B. This means only that throtlleshaft and butterfly can't be totally closed

C. Accelatorpump -> open 1/4 turn from seated, if hesitates in acceleration open more in
1/4 turn increments .
