Default the speedometer headache

(in case you missed this query before) From shotpeen28--67 XLH Here's what I got. There's no place on the underside of gearcase to attach a speedo drive cable. (Maybe bike didn't come w/ a speedo. ; maybe cases aren't orig. Dunno) Ive read it was a flawed thing anyway, prone to failure. Later models had speedo cable driven by a front wheel geared mechanism and i'm told it only fits up w/newer front ends w/ disc brakes. Iv'e got a cool, orig. speedo/tach. item for my restoration & need a drive device. Ive read about a rear wheel cable drive for much later models. Any ideas? I'd hate to go w/aftermarket elec. stuff. Shout back Thanks MF

The speedo drive goes into the transmission on the right side just behind the oil pump. I have highlighted this on the illustration. The drive is not shown, just the threaded hole where it screws into the case.
Someone may have removed yours at one time, but there should be a plug in the hole.........pg

Some cases speedogear is removed be cause of damage, I have seen many biker have replced
original speedo with bicycle speedo. Problem with those are that wires are too short for IH.
There is also wireless options but usually ignition interferes it so that is shows "whatever"
I have used Sigma 800 in some cases where that speedogear hole is welded ...

Any chance you have a later model crankcase? In the 70's, they moved the speedometer drive to the front wheel and stopped drilling the case for it.

I also have the speedo drive with the unit in place. The previous ownerinstalleda plastic-cup over the part that is on the outside. The thing is that it leaks oil (Primary oil). Not so much but it leavs a mark on the garagefloor after each ride. My question is about getting a new/old speedo to my XLCH '71. I also have a front wheel speedo option. Which would be best to use in terms of cabling and lasting the Trans speedo drive or the Front wheel option?
