I have a pretty serious oil leak going on and wanted to check with you all before I take on any unnecessary work. This leak has developed gradually and drips down around the back of the motor, real close to the primary drain plug. In fact, I replaced the gasket on that plug and sealed up the threads with some Teflon plumber's tape, but the leak proved to be coming further from the right of the engine. I had also suspected the chain was just throwing oil off in the sprocket cover, but this is way too much now to be that. Plus, my primary/transmission oil does run out over time.
I'm now looking hard at the sprocket seal. Does this sound right to you? It doesn't look like a big job, but I do hate to go poking around and replacing parts I don't need.
While I was looking at the motor, I did discover I also have a missing gearcase bolt - I'll get that replaced tonight, and it might also be a leak point, but I do not see the amount of oil I'd expect on the outside of the motor if that were the case.
Could be the sprocket shaft seal. They will wear out fast and leak worse if the chain's run too tight. Before replacing the seal, see if your chain is too tight. If it is, slack off on it a little and see if the leak slows down or stops.
Thanks for the reply; I don't think my chain is overly tight (at the moment) though it probably has been at some time in the past. And I know I've never changed that seal in the ten or so years I've had this bike. It's a '79. Something tells me that seal has never been replaced...
An update - I replaced the missing gearcase bolt and found that ALL of the remaining bolts needed some tightening as well. They all turned in about 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
The leak has been greatly reduced - to a few drops after each ride, down from a puddle!
So, what does everybody here use to clean up oil off the concrete? :^)
