Default case crack...

As I was tearing down my motor, I noticed a slight crack in the case, where the oil return fitting is. I guess someone overtightened this... ouch and it made a small crack down the side... These cases are cast alum correct? I wasnt sure if it could be repaired by welding or not because its cast. Thanks in advanve.

Take a look inside the transmission cavity portion of the engine case and see if the crack goes through the depth of the case. Yes, the cases are cast aluminum and they can be repaired by welding. It's always a plus to befriend a good TIG welder in times such as these.
I have a slight external surface crack on my R/H engine case around the countershaft bearing boss. The crack was not visible inside the trans case. It has been there for years and has not expanded or deepened over time.
Those old 900 and 1000 cases were not very strong from the factory and I've seen countless sets explode on drag-bikes.Inspect those cases closely and definitelyquestion any cracks you may find.

It's always entertaining when someone walks up and asks me, "What kind of bike is that and what is that thing with the pedal on it?" Times have sure changed!

Thanks, I tig just about all my parts, steel, stainless, aluminum. I rarely mig anything as I have more control and cleaner welds with a tig.I have never done it on cast aluminum, as to why I was asking. I wasnt sure if the composition of cast made it different from a solid piece of billet for example. Guess I'll find some scrap cast and try it out. Thanks again.

Practice sounds good.. you need to grind out a v and fill it in then grind again to get if back flat. if you got a shop that will help a lot put it on a mill or something depending on what you need to end up with
