My Sporty recently quit making music, and I am in HD purgatory, awaiting the diagnosis of my local bike shop. I really just want to get her home, tear her down, and start from scratch, but if I can ride her until winter...that would be great.
I'm looking into some serious increase in power, vibration (I AM a female), and of course, thunder.
I googled and found a post that was discussed previously about stroking and boring...I was hoping for some information a little more up to date. I am seriously looking for some improvements that will sate my hunger.
No help from me on the boring/stroking, but I'd love to see some pics of your 83XLX...since I've got one too. I'm sure you'll get a reply with some help pretty soon.
First off, let me say the following is nothing more than my opinion, and nothing more.
There is only one reason you should bore an ironhead, and that is because the bore is worn, the engine burns oil and smokes too much.
A rebore, along with a valve job will restore the engine power back to normal.
If your intent is to bore the engine out, and worse yet, increase to stroke to gain more power and cubic inches......then you need to solve that problem by buying yourself a Twin Cam machine.
The expense of boring and stroking an ironhead is some serious money and the results will be very discouraging. Stroking an ironhead lessens it's dependability as well. It becomes more dificult to start the engine and in general is just a bunch of negative things to do to a fine bike.

I agree withPinion, before I even got my bike I was looking into stroke kits, my motor is bored, but only .20 over and it was due to a complete rebuild. the guy that did the build, did however put in 10:1 pistons over the 9:1. Anyhow what im getting at is that after I got the bike, I was shocked at the power, I never expected it out of this bike. I feel that I can hang with any of the really big boys, and the ones I cant hang with, well I dont want to go that fast anyways. What mods do you already have? there my be more power hidden in there that you just havent tapped into yet. ie: pipes, breather, carb. ect, ect. This also is just my opinion, I dont want to discurage anyone from doing what they want. Its your bike, make it your own. Good luck with getting it out of the shop.
I agree PG don't bore it, if it isn't wornout. Also need to notice that there is 2 differend types of 1000cc cylinders one that fits only to 72-73 engines cases and one for 74-> cylinder base mounting hole are differend pattern... T&O sells 4Âź" stroker wheels...

To the original topic, mine's not bored or stroked. It has the "usual" intake and exhaust power mods and is fine for what it is. Stroking a Sportster is asking for a shorter fuse - the piston speed on a stocker is already way up there, and stroking one just makes it worse. Boring stock cylinders, even to the max (.70 over)won't give a significant increase in engine size.

I'm not sure about new cases, I think that bolt pattern is only difference...there were old topic about cases...I was too lacy to find it.
I just find it out last week, one of my friend had cracked cylinder in his -72 xlh and he was looking new cylinder for it. I had hint that there might be some differences in cylinders in that era when 900cc was dropped out of production. There is also top-end casketkits to ->71, 72-73, 74-> . So I had -74 cylinderbase casket and we compaired it into this broken cylinder, so 72-73 1000cc cylinder has different bolt pattern than -74 but it has same cylinderhead casket. We figured out that 900cc cylinders must fit in 72 cases ( my friend bought 900cc cylinder) but not bolt pattern in cylinderbase is differend and it doesn't fit.
Also 900cc cylinders has different bolt pattern in cylinderhead and different cylinderhead casket. One thing more came up when I remembered old topic about cylinderhead bolts
There might be that those dodecagon-bolts are longer than hexagonal ??
I'm working on to find out measurements of cylinderbase bolt patterns on different cylinders
I agree with the previous coments about boring and stroking a 1000cc 2-cyl engine. there is not much power to be gained by doing so. you would be better off with higher compression, bigger cam, bigger carb, free'er exhaust.
