have 82 sportster am getting a scraping tapping noise in front head or camcase checked compression well within specs. pushrod adjustment still ok what could this be need help to figure it out
no havent checked either also rear head and rocker are make no noisw at all will check those parts a little later need tools to remove end plugs allen style and bigger than what i have
Yep, shimming to the low end of the tolerance is the usual method. Just check everything and make sure the rocker arm ends and the pushrod ends haven't been eating each other, and that the bushing-to-arm fit is within spec.
hey pococj i pulled the rockers and they had about a .001 shake at the pushrod side book says they should be .0005-.0025 so i guess they need new bushings i even pulled the cam cover and the lifters and lifter blocks all is good there i didnt pull the heads but looked at springs none are broke you think i should pull them and check them also? cant get new rocker arms obsolete but can get new bushings will have to take them and have them done as i dont have tools to do it myself will let you know what happens
thanks alot ride hard die free

First of all, clearance is not measured by shaking them. You use a dial indicator to determine how much side play you have with the rocker arm(s). Perhaps I misunderstood your description of how the .001 was determined.
If the recommended clearance is .0005 (a ˝ thousandth) minimum to .0025 (2˝ thousandths) maximum, then you say yours measures .001 clear. This is dead center (within a ˝ thousandth) between the minimum and the maximum. NOTE:I believe you misread the standard for minimum. Look at it again and see if it does not say .001 (stated as one thousandth) to .0025 (stated as 2˝ thousandths) loose. The figure .005 is almost zero clearance, so I believe you misread something.
Result....? I cannot understand how you think you need new bushings.
Your clearance of .001 is still within the limits, and on the low side at that. If the bushings gave .003 or higher, only then, the bushings need to be replaced..............pg
ok it says in shop manual .0005{five ten thousands-.0025-twenty five ten thousands}also on 82 sportster it has a spring and shim witch is used to hold rocker against the pushrod side of rocker book also says they are not shimable but if what u say is true then what is makin noise took it all apart last night pulled lifters all is solid checked the cams for side play all good there when i said they shake the rockers holdin in your hand an grabbin either end of shaft they shake {thats with shaft in rocker} not side to side like slidin it into or out of- but like out of round or sloppy fit but if u say its ok what else could it bepiston slap or something in lower end noise is only in front cylinder onlyand can her it all through it from cams to rockers
