Default grinding inside crank case

I love my ironhead.

its me again with the 68xlch. I just recently blew out my head gasket, replaced it, and then when i started the bike again I heard a very very loud grinding noise coming from the crank case below the rear jug.... sounds like gear teeth grinding. If i pull in the clutch nothing changes and im to nervous to keep it running for further test. I know I could pull it apart and figure out what the heck it is, but I was hoping for maybe a stear in the right direction...

Thanks for your time,

It seems obvious that the two are related. What were you doing when the gasket blew? regular operation, getting on the throttle, burn-out? I hate to even mention it, but, possible broken ring fragments? The crank case is pretty open and I would think that if it were trash in there, it would circle around the entire compartment as apposed to staying in the rear. Are you sure it's in the crank and not in the gear case? Possible damage to the tappets, rods, or cams?

I was just cruisin- (I didnt torque the head bolts down to specs) and is def not trash, the sound is way to consistent. Yes may be in gear case. not rods, kinda sounds to deep to be tappets...

Thanks for your time,

The only thing I can think of that may have happened is you installed the gasket on the cylinder incorrectly. Each cylinder has 2 small holes in addition to the 4 head studs.
If you flipped the gasket over then these 2 holes will be blocked. The holes carry oil down and exit into the mid to lower cylinder wall.
The draining oil lubes the lower cylinder and piston skirt.
If you are not sure if the holes were aligned, I suggest you pull the head and check.
I have scanned the manual and written a couple of notes on the page to show you what I am talking about. Understand I am only guessing at what may have happened here.
How long did you ride the bike after hearing the noise?
If the gasket was flipped over and you did not ride the bike at all ( I am saying you installed the gasket and fired it up and the grinding noise started right away) then it is not from the holes being blocked, but rather another reason I think.
Coincidental things do happen, but it is rare. So for now I associate the new grinding problem with something related to the head gasket install.
You do not want to ride it anymore until the cause has been found and fixed.........pg

PG sounds like he's on the right path but something just came to me, you say that when you blew the gasket it was because you didn't torque the bolts down enough. That means you had done some other work on it previously. What did you do before and maybe this is related to that and is just now showing the symptons. I've had some really wierd coincidences in the past that drove me insaine so I wouldn't rule it out.

well i overhauled the entire top end. but rode it around fine for about 20 miles. No weird noise and ran incredibly awesome. I def. installed head gaskets correctly unless some gasket maker filled the oil holes- but im usually good at lookin out for that. Noise started right away.

H-mmm,
'Grinding noise started up as soon as it fired off. Sounds like it is coming from under the rear jug?'

Well, the grinding noise as soon after you replaced the second gasket and fired it up huh? I cannot associate anything with that could have been done to cause a grind.
All you can do is remove the primary cover to check the primary and clutch.
Then look as the primary chain adjustment and the adjuster hardware. Make sure all the bolts in the adjuster are tight.
Then you need to look elsewhere if nothing is found there. To tell you the truth I have no idea of where to look either. The transmission is not connected up really until you put it in gear. Does it shift through a 4 gears sitting there with the engine off? Rock the bike back and forth to advance it through the gears.
Let us know the results and meanwhile I will try to come up with another idea. Too bad I cannot hear the noise, that may help to ID where this could be coming from......pg
