Timing Case Leak
Re-installed the timing case cover on my '76 xlh.
My timing case leaks because the new gasket I put on doesn't have a portion that surounds the case passage hole shown in the picture. (the arrow points to it, and it is directly below the oil return strainer)
HD must have a couple variations on that gasket, because I ordered 2, (same part number)and they are both different. Obviously the one I used doesn't cover that passage....now I got a leaker.
What does this passage in my case do?
Thanks

This pin is inserted at the factory and then peened (the slash mark) to prevent the pin from coming out.
Now, although it is not a passage, it will most certainly pass a small amount of oil, so you need a timing cover gasket that covers this up.
As to the difference in gaskets, I can only say they must be for different year models..............pg
Why? everyone here has asked themselves, at one point, "WTF was I thinking?". Happens to me more than I care to admit. But, unless you didn't catch it untill some type of major mechanical malfunction directly linked to the issue, take it on the chin and feel good about bringing something to the forum that may help someone else. One man's f-up is another man's preventitive maintanance.
