Hey guys I just got my 82 sportster frame and working on that while Im workin on it I wanna try to locate my motor... Anyone know where good places are to find motors???
Also Is the Ironhead the ONLY HD motor that will fit that XLS frame? As well as forks... I am looking to try to get my bike along the lines of a 09 Iron or sportster look....Agressive... Most likely blacked out...
Im new to Harleys I am coming from the other side of the spectrum... But I dont want to loose that sporty feel too much either... I just feel my wife would enjoy riding this so much better... and I know I will too! My back wont kill me as much....
All I have is the Frame.. its one step at a time... CLEAN, MINIMAL and AGGRESSIVE are what Im going for with this build... If anyone wants to give input help etc... IM ALL EARS!!!
Where you at? Craigslist would be a possibility if you're in a large area. I just made a CL trade but I had to drive 600 miles because I live in rural, KS. Traded a running 88 Vulcan 1500 for a 76 ironhead. It needs some work but it's all there. Anyway, I would say CL, Ebay maybe or good ole fashioned word of mouth.
Ya I will def post a build thread once I really get rolling! I just missed a great ironhead literally within walking distance from my house too on craigslist... I live in pittsburgh I can find tons of parts but the motor is the tricky part so far...What is the best year I should be looking for too?
I'd look for an '82, '83, or early '84 Ironhead motor - it will fit with no headaches and won't have the alternator problems that came with the late '84 and '85 Ironheads. I believe any newer Evo Sportster front end will fit OK, but you may have to make changes with the speedometer drive and the brakes to adapt it.
Also does anyone know where I can download an FSM? (Facotry Service Manual)
Thanks!

Yep,those alternator bikes aren't built very well(charging system)
