Default Looking for an Ironhead

I am looking for a replacement notor for my 1970 XLCH. I have found a couple of risky alternatives but was wondering if anyone has a line on a company making new replacement motor/ trans assys. Are there any other options? Does any one have a good runner or decent canidate for overhaul? Thanks Fred

The only option is a used one. Best bet would be eBay. Otherwise, local bike shops, CraigsList, Kijiji, etc.

just rebuild your engine, get a set of used cases if you need to..an ironhead is really simple, only slightley more complicated then a briggs&stratton.buy a cheap manuel and you will be surprised what you could do..or get a good motor on ebay and sell your old motor for a couple hundred bucks for parts..if you build your orig motor it will be basicly new..

I bought a rolling chassis so as far as the motor I am starting from scratch. Nice stock uncut frame with title but no motor/trans. I had two previous ironheads and I rebuilt the second one, so I wouldnt mind buying that. I was just trying to figure out why no one makes scratch builts like so many other harley motors but I guess that is because before 70 the vin number was on the block itself. Any one got something worth fixing?

have to be sure to get paper work on whatever motor you find, here in ohio the motor and the frame vins have to match

Wow, they are strict in Ohio. I have a title that matches the frame vin. In Florida the motor numbers have to match the vin until 1969. From 1970 and later the frame numbers have to match the vin. Florida doesnt require both to match. What do you do in Ohio if your motor grenades and you have to replace it?

you have to get a title or a bill of sale with the motor, then you have to get it inspected by the state highway patrol, they will run all the vin numbers to make sure nothin is stolen, if any of the numbers come back bad, you wont see your bike again! all my years or riding a ironhead i have NEVER had a cop even think about checking my vin.
