You can get a James Complete Engine Gasket Kit from any of the usual suppliers - local indie motorcycle shop, J&P Cycles, various eBay/internet sellers, etc. Here it is at J&P ...

http://www.jpcycles.com/product/431-500

I presume that you would install this yourself? Why do you think that you need one? Is your bike in need of a complete engine rebuild? More info please.

my '71 xlch did not come factory equipped with one. '71 xlh would be the same.

The "run/kill switch" wires first show up in the 1973-74 wiring diagrams..... so I take it 1973 would be the first year for a factory run switch.

For 1971, all you got is the key.

I am pretty sure despite my hopes of it being untrue but I indeed need a complete engine rebuild.

Please tell us exactly what you observe about the bike that makes you think that it needs the rebuild. Post pictures. It is somewhat rare that a complete rebuild is needed. Most often it is just a top end rebuild that is needed. There are specific tests that you can do to determine if the bottom end needs also to be rebuilt. These tests are in the manuals. We can help you with all of this.

You need both manuals before you touch a wrench ...

99451-78B factory parts catalog
99484-78 factory service manual

These are available from the sources that i quoted in my previous post. Spend lots of time studying these.

Be prepared to do all of the dismantling, cleaning and inspecting of parts yourself. Then locate a good indie motorcycle shop and/or a good machine shop to do some of the work. Then re-install everything yourself. Finding the good shops can be a difficult part, but we can advise you on that as well.

that J&P link is for example only...the fitment is for a big twin.

If you ask, they will ship you a cataloge for free...from which you can better assess your costs approx.
