A Sportster 1200 is the more appropriate comparison, the one with the small (2.1 gallon) tank is the Forty Eight. Rated at 48 mpg, that'll give you right about 100 miles before it runs dry, and the 0-60 time is 4.3. So still a lot slower, but more directly comparable.
And of course it all depends on how you drive. On my 2018 Fat Bob, it (currently) has the little 3.6-gallon tank. I have run that to the "LOW" reading after just 120 miles, and I've also made it last to 176 miles, depending on how I ride. You can certainly do the same with the Sportster (well, not the same numbers, but you can influence its overall range with different driving style) and you can clearly do the same with the Livewire (as Agoober reported, users are claiming 130+ miles).
To those who think that the only measure of a motorcycle is how far you can go before refilling, the Sportster with the little tank provides comparable range and a 2-minute refill vs. the 40-60 minute refill of the Livewire.

Where are you reading those reports? I looked through the comments in that article and didn't see anyone claiming to own a livewire or how many miles they got on it.
Now on the flip side, I just read a test report of the Zero SRF and the test rider only got 78 miles on his ride through some canyons in California.
